Temporary Residence for Family Members

Temporary Residence for Family Members may be needed when they if they would like to join their family member(s) in Canada, and stay in Canada as visitors, or foreign workers, or as foreign students.

In order obtain Temporary Residence in Canada, such family members may need to obtain one of the following temporary authorizations in Canada:

  • Visitor Visa or ETA (unless exempt)
  • Work Permit
  • Study Permit

Visitor Visa or ETA

Applicants may need to apply for a Visitor Visa or ETA if they would like to travel to Canada to temporarily stay with the member of their family member in Canada, or to discover Canada, or to study in Canada for less than 6 months.

Work Permit

Applicants who would like to work in Canada while they stay temporarily in Canada with their family member(s), would have to apply for a work permit.

Study Permit

Applicants who would like to study in Canada while they stay temporarily in Canada with their family member(s), would have to apply for a study permit.
